Bilateral relations between North Macedonia and Spain reached their peak on July 31, 2022, when Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Perez-Castejon visited North Macedonia and met with Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski and President Stevo Pendarovski. It was the first visit of a Spanish Prime Minister to North Macedonia since its independence in 1991.
The visit represents a turning point in the relations between the two countries. In the last three decades, bilateral cooperation has been rather weak, while economic relations are limited and do not use their potential. In terms of its political presence, Spain has been largely absent from Southeast Europe for the past three decades, including North Macedonia.
Thinking and Working Together is a policy document with recommendations for developing the partnership and increasing the scope of cooperation between North Macedonia and Spain.
